A Family Affair

San Antonio, Texas | June 29, 2012

Like any true fan, Judith J. really, really wanted a Whataburger. But there was just one problem. The Air Force Lieutenant was stationed in Germany.

But that didn’t stop her. When an airman from her base was coming to San Antonio for training, Judith gave him very specific orders: “Call my father whatever time you’re getting ready to leave, and he’ll bring you a Whataburger to bring back to me.”

And so it happened. Judith’s father, Jorge J., got the call at 5:15 a.m. one morning, and hurried to the closest Whataburger by. Hot, double-wrapped Whataburger in hand, Jorge headed to the airport, where he sealed the order in a vacuum bag and put it in the airman’s carryon for the 18-hour flight to Germany.

It was 10 a.m. in Germany when Judith’s custom order (a Number One, with ketchup, pickles, and cheese only) arrived, a taste of home that made the Lieutenant’s mouth water. She immediately called her dad and said, “It’s soooooo good!”

Now, back in the states, Judith’s love for Whataburger continues.  Judith got married in San Antonio inApril 2012 — and planned the most important part of the day: her after-reception meal at Whataburger.

The after-wedding meal at Whataburger is a family tradition that began with her grandparents' wedding in 1957.

Jan. 20, 1957: Young couple A.C. and Dora J. are wed in an intimate ceremony in McAllen, Texas. The couple splurges on a post-wedding meal at Whataburger, beginning a family tradition that still continues.

April 27, 1985: Jorge and Judi J. wed, then attend a lively reception where both bride and groom are so busy celebrating that neither has a chance to eat. When they leave that night, they stop in at the local Whataburger for their first meal as a married couple.

April 28 and 29, 2012: The tradition continues — in duplicate. Judith J. married Danny S. on April 28, while sister Jacqui J. married Roy F. on April 29, both in their hometown of San Antonio. And for these brides, “something old/ something new/ something borrowed/ something blue” just wouldn’t cut it. Both couples got their marriages off to the best start possible by stopping in to enjoy a meal at Whataburger on their wedding night.
